Fifteen

Ivy blinked. Blinding brightness caused her to shut her eyes immediately. She squeezed them tight and tried to open them again. This time, she lifted her heavy lids slowly. For a moment she wondered where she was. Beeping machines grounded her. Was this a hospital? Ivy blinked a few times again. Faded memories tried to come to her but only showed flashes.

Why was she here? she wondered. Was she in New York? Where was her family?

“Ivy,” someone said her name. They sounded relieved.

The person sounded familiar but she couldn’t figure out who it was. She lifted herself up in the bed, trying to focus on the bright room around her. Her sight was blurry but her ears seem to hear more keenly. Those beeping sounds came in loudest. She heard voices in the distance. There were footsteps.

“Nurse! She’s awake,” the familiar voice said. After a few padded steps, someone stood before her. “Ivy. Can you hear me?”

Ivy looked up. Clarity rolled in pushing the haze away. “Jordan?” Her voice was hoarse. She cleared her throat. “W-what are you doing here?” She looked around again, taking in the emergency room. “Why am I here?”

“You fainted,” Jordan said and gently touched her hand. His hand felt good on hers. She needed to feel his warmth. Ivy looked down at it. He followed her eyes and moved his hand away. “Sorry,” he said before asking, “How are you feeling?”

“I’m okay. You said I fainted? Where?”

“At the hotel, just before getting into the elevator,” he told her. “I tried to get in touch with your agent and the other woman you were with, but couldn’t get into your phone. I called 911 and got you here ASAP.”

She asked anxiously, “Did you tell anyone else?”

“I didn’t know who else to call. I reached out to your cousin Tyler through his Instagram, but I haven’t heard anything back. I don’t have his phone number.”

Ivy tried to sit up fast. Her head hurt. Slowly she sat back. “What did you say to him?”

“I didn’t want to alarm him, so I just said to call me and left my number.”

“How long have I been in here?” She looked at the IV connected to her arm.

“About two hours. The doctors ran some tests. I didn’t want you to wake up alone.” Jordan walked over to the chair he was sitting in. “Here’s your phone. I was hoping someone would call that could get me closer to one of your family members.”

“No!” Ivy held both hands up. Jordan’s brows furrowed. “I mean...thanks. I don’t want to alarm anyone without knowing what’s happening.”

“Okay. I’ll let the nurse know you’re awake.” He handed her cell phone to her. “Now you can call who you need to.” Jordan stepped out, giving her space to think about what was happening.

Everything was getting clearer. She remembered being in the hotel, exchanging words with Jordan. Ivy cringed. She recalled that they may not have been nice words. But what caused her to faint?

She laid back on the cool pillows.
